What a small business website should have in 2026

A small business website needs your name, address, phone, hours and services written as plain text, a layout that works on a phone, and a one-tap way to call or message you. Everything else is optional until those are right, and leaving them out costs you the customer who could not find them.

The must-haves

  1. A domain in your own name. You should be the registered owner of yourbusiness.in, paid directly to the company that sells it. If someone else owns it, they own your address on the web.
  2. Your facts as text. Name, address, phone, hours, services, and prices if you choose to publish them. Google says important content should be available in textual form. Hours inside a photo, or a menu only as a PDF, are hard for any machine to read.
  3. A phone-first layout. Google says it uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking, and recommends responsive design, one page that adapts to every screen. The mobile version should carry the same content as a desktop one.
  4. Speed. Google’s published targets for a good experience are: main content visible within 2.5 seconds, response to a tap in under 200 milliseconds, and a layout that does not jump (a shift score under 0.1). Google also says these metrics are one part of page experience and do not guarantee a good ranking.
  5. Call and message buttons. A tap-to-call link and a WhatsApp link with a prefilled message. See WhatsApp booking.
  6. A unique title and description for every page. Google says a good title is unique to the page, clear and concise. It also says it does not use the keywords meta tag.
  7. Real photos with short descriptions. Write the alt text so it explains what the photo shows.
  8. Structured data. A schema block of the right type, matching the visible text. Google says structured data must be a true representation of the page content. See the schema guide.
  9. A link between your website and your Google Business Profile. Same name, address, phone and hours on both. See the checklist. Also verify the site in Google Search Console, which is free.
  10. Privacy and contact pages. Say who runs the site and how to reach them.

What leaving each out costs you

We cannot put an honest number on this, so we will not invent one. What we can say is what happens:

A note on cost

We do not publish prices on this website. For any website you are quoted for, ask in writing: what is included, who owns the domain, who can change the site after it goes live, and what happens if you stop paying. The free visibility test shows which of these your current site already has.

See where your business stands. The free visibility test reads your website the way Google and AI assistants do and shows a score. Prefer a new site? We build a free preview first, and you pay only if you keep it.

Questions

What does a small business website need?

Your name, address, phone, hours and services as plain text, a layout that works on a phone, quick loading, a tap-to-call and message button, and a domain registered in your own name.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

The profile is the first thing people see on Maps. A website adds a place you control for treatments, services and prices as text, and Google asks that the website on your profile represents your location.

How do I know if my website is good enough for Google?

Use Google Search Console, which is free, and our visibility test. Check that the page is indexed, that crawling is allowed, that it loads fast on a phone and that its structured data matches the visible text.

Should I buy a package that promises first-page ranking?

No one can promise a ranking. Google’s own guide says there are no secrets that will automatically rank a site first, and that there is no guarantee any site will be indexed.
