WhatsApp booking vs a booking widget for salons
For a salon with a few stylists, a WhatsApp button with a ready-made message is the simplest way to start taking bookings, because customers need no new app or account beyond WhatsApp. A booking widget is better once bookings are too many to confirm by hand, or you want customers to pick a free slot without waiting for a reply.
How they differ
- WhatsApp. The customer taps a button, a chat opens with a message already typed, and you reply with a time. You can talk, ask which service, and see a reference photo. It needs a person to answer, and double-booking is possible if you track slots in your head.
- Booking widget. A booking page from a provider, shown on your site or linked from your profile. Customers see free slots and book without a reply. Google says that when a booking provider is connected, customers receive appointment reminders. Setup takes longer, and Google notes that a provider might charge you.
Which to choose
- One or two stylists, fewer bookings than you can answer in a day: start with WhatsApp.
- Several stylists, or you miss messages or double-book: move to a widget.
- Customers mostly ask “what does it cost” or send a photo first: WhatsApp suits that conversation.
- Customers book at night or on Sundays when no one can reply: a widget books them while you are closed.
- Not sure: use both. Put the widget as the Booking link on your Google profile and keep WhatsApp for questions.
How to set up WhatsApp booking properly
- Use the WhatsApp Business app. It lets you set a business profile, greet people when they start a chat and reply when you are away.
- Make a click-to-chat link with a prefilled message. WhatsApp’s help page says the link is wa.me followed by your full phone number in international format, with no zeros, brackets or dashes, and a text parameter holds the message. Use something like: “Hi, I’d like to book. Service: / Day and time: / Name:”.
- Put the link on your website button and try it on your Google profile. In the profile’s Booking section, choose Add link and paste it. Google’s help does not list which addresses it accepts; if it is rejected, link your website’s booking section.
- Keep one diary. Write every confirmed booking in one place, paper or phone, so two staff never promise the same slot.
- Write on your site how to book. “Book on WhatsApp: tap the button. Open Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 8 pm.” as plain text, so an assistant can tell a customer how to book.
If you choose a widget
Google lets you connect a booking provider from the Bookings section of your profile, and says the provider shows up on your profile within a week. If you don’t use a provider, you can add your own booking link instead. Ask the provider in writing what it charges and whether you keep your customer list if you leave.

Questions
Is WhatsApp booking enough for a salon?
For a small salon, yes. It works while one person can answer promptly and track slots reliably. When you start missing messages or double-booking, add a booking widget.
Can I put a WhatsApp link on my Google Business Profile?
Google lets you add your own booking link in the Booking section of your profile: choose Add link and paste the web address. Its help page does not say which kinds of address it accepts, so try your WhatsApp link, and if it is rejected, link the booking section of your website instead. Up to 10 links per category are allowed.
Does a booking widget cost money?
Google says that when you book through a provider, the provider might charge you. Ask for the charges in writing before you sign up.
Does it matter for ChatGPT or Google AI answers?
Only indirectly. What helps is writing, as plain text on your site and profile, how customers should book and when you are open, so any tool that reads them can say it correctly.
